Compton goes all fiber with Motorola GPON

Compton Communications has selected Motorola’s gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) products for its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network and new commercial service offerings.

Motorola said that Compton will be the first cable company to deploy its GPON technology, and the first Canadian company to do so.

Compton will use the Motorola AXS1800 Optical Access Platform and ONT1400GT Optical Network Terminal.

“Over the last 18 months, Motorola has been working with cable operators to establish the best way to incorporate FTTH technology into existing cable network applications,” said George Simmons, Motorola’s corporate VP and GM of access network solutions. “Commercial services quickly emerged as a key area of interest among our customers, and GPON is a natural fit as cable companies like Compton Communications look to deliver dedicated high-throughput connectivity in support of business and enterprise networking requirements.”

Compton said that it intends to target commercial service applications where hundreds of megabits or even gigabit throughput is required.

Motorola’s ONT1400GT can be configured to deliver TDM voice, VoIP, multi-port high-speed Internet access and IPTV via a single fiber optic connection to the home. The ONT1400GT also supports interactive services by integrating upstream signals from Motorola’s family of RF headends, RF set-tops and combination RF/IP set-top box solutions.
