Cox Business has teamed up with IO Data Center to provide a robust data recovery solution for the International Genomics Consortium (IGC) in Phoenix.
ICG, a cancer research organization, is using a fiber link from Cox Business to create a direct connection from its Phoenix headquarters to IO’s Phoenix data center. The Cox Business Metro Ethernet connection serves as a disaster recovery option and backup network connecting IGC to IO.
ICG helps enable two key components in The Cancer Genome Atlas project (TCGA): collecting much of the tissue and data as a Tissue Source Site network and processing this as a Biospecimen Core Resource.
“IGC’s new disaster recovery network will make us more appealing to national agencies when applying for federal research contracts,” said David Neal, IGC’s chief financial officer. “Cox Business and IO have the technical expertise we required to expand our own security standards, as well as to provide assurance to the government and other research partners that data and services remain secure and operational at all times. The quality of service available with Cox Business and IO is unparalleled.”
IGC oversees a large network of hospitals around the country that provide cancer tissue samples for analysis in TCGA. IGC also serves as a central laboratory and biobank for the project.
“Cox Business is dedicated to providing new layers of connectivity and security options for growing enterprises like IGC and is proud to know that our network is helping the organization advance its mission of fighting cancer and complex diseases,” said Hyman Sukiennik, vice president of Cox Business.
Two years ago, Cox Business connected Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix via a direct fiber link to the University of Arizona’s supercomputer that analyzes the human genome for terminally ill patients.
Cox has been at the forefront of business services for years, and it has set its sights on increasing commercial services revenue. Cox Business wholesale revenues grew approximately 30 percent in 2011 and represented more than $100 million of Cox Business’ $1 billion total annual revenue stream.
