Cox Business said today that it has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s IP service router products and services to support its Ethernet-based offerings for business and carrier customers.
Cox Business, a division of Cox Communications, is using Alcatel-Lucent’s Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) platform for its network operations, which Cox said will help it evolve data services and add new services for customers.
Cox Business is currently ranked as the fourth-largest provider of business Ethernet services in the United States based on customer ports, according to Vertical Systems Group.
“Ethernet offers network flexibility and more capabilities at a lower cost, making it the preferred networking technology of many IT decision makers,” said Kristine Faulkner, vice president of product development and management for Cox Business. “Cox Business delivers reliable Ethernet solutions to our customers over both fiber and hybrid fiber/coax (HFC), and Alcatel-Lucent will aid in the future evolution of our portfolio.”
The Alcatel-Lucent platform enables Cox Business to deliver enhanced business services over a common service routing edge based on the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router.
Cox Business said it’s actively involved with technical associations, standards bodies and industry associations dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Ethernet services, such as the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF). Cox Business has been certified as MEF 9 and 14 compliant. Robert Kuse, senior technical project manager at Cox, currently sits on the MEF’s board of directors.
