The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers announced today that Cox executive vice president and CTO Kevin Hart will be the keynote speaker at its SCTE SEMI (Smart Energy Management Initiative) Forum 2013 in April.
Hart, who is also program committee chairman for SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in New Orleans in September, is expected to highlight the cable operator’s “Cox Conserves” program, but he will also discuss other ways cable operators can change how their entire workforces, operations and outreach programs can reflect modern energy and sustainable thinking.
“Cox is a leader in executing energy management strategies that align with business objectives,” said Derek DiGiacomo, senior director of information systems and energy management programs and SMS lead for the SCTE. “By sharing Cox’s experiences and his own vision, Kevin will be instrumental in heightening awareness of energy considerations and in defining more than a dozen SCTE Standards and Recommended Practices that are on the SMS roadmap.”
Scheduled for April 10 in Atlanta, SEMI Forum 2013 will bring together operators, vendors and other experts for discussion of power, density, performance, sustainability and disaster recovery issues. Preliminary events, including working group meetings of the Sustainability Management Subcommittee (SMS) within the SCTE Standards Program, are scheduled for April 9. Additional SEMI Forum details, as well as registration, are available online.
“Our success in reducing carbon footprint through alternative power for facilities and fleet and more efficient computing has been significant, but there is far more to be done,” Hart said. “To keep up with the exponential growth of broadband services and capacity, cable operators, programmers and vendors need to take energy thinking to a whole new level and ensure that every level of the cable workforce keeps energy and sustainability in mind throughout their decision-making processes.”
A veteran of more than 25 years in the telecommunications and information technology industries, Hart joined Cox after having served as CIO of Clearwire, where he led the transformation of the IT organization during nationwide deployment of the company’s 4G wireless broadband service.
Previously, as CIO of Level 3 Communications, Hart implemented initiatives that streamlined legacy processes and aligned objectives across Level 3 and eight acquisitions. Hart began his professional career with SBC Communications; he later served as director of strategic planning for International Paper, as well as in a variety of roles – including vice president of the telecom, media, entertainment and global OSS practice – with Capgemini Consulting.
Hart outlined some of Cox’s key initiatives at The Cable Show earlier this year.
The SEMI Forum 2013 is open to attendance by operators, programmers, vendors and other interested parties. More information on the SEMI initiative is available online, or contact DiGiacomo at ddigiacomo@scte.org.
