Cox Communications has launched a network of hotspots in northern Virginia for its Cox WiFi service.

Cox Preferred, Premier and Ultimate tier subscribers in northern Virginia can access the Wi-Fi service for free. Cox WiFi features download speeds of up to 15 Mbps and upload speeds of 4 Mbps, but the speeds can vary and are dependent upon the number of smartphones, tablets or other devices connected to the access point at any given time.

There are more than 750 hotspots available for use throughout Fairfax County and Fairfax. Cox customers can log on to the access points with their Cox user IDs and passwords.

Once customers connect to Cox WiFi using a device, the same device will automatically connect for the next 30 days without customers having to re-enter their Cox credentials. In addition, customers can attach three devices per user ID and 10 per account at a time, allowing family members access to Cox WiFi, as well.

“Our customers want access to reliable and high-speed Internet wherever they are,” said J.D. Myers II, market vice president for northern Virginia operations at Cox. “Providing them Cox WiFi service allows us to meet their changing information access needs, whether it’s TV programming, social connections, home monitoring, or simply general information that is secure and reliable from the four walls of their home to the four corners of their community. Cox provides solutions not only today, but for the future, as well.”

Cox Communications is part of the Wi-Fi roaming accord, which also includes Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Cablevision, that was announced at last year’s Cable Show, but a spokesman for Cox said the northern Virginia network was just for Cox customers at this point. The roaming agreement allows subscribers to access Wi-Fi networks from other cable operators when they’re out of their own service footprint.

Cox, which has offered Wi-Fi services in the Las Vegas area for some time, hasn’t announced what vendor, or vendors, it’s using for Cox WiFi.
