D3 speeds spread in Virginia, Michigan, Colorado

Cox Communications has launched new DOCSIS 3.0-based broadband speed tiers in its Hampton Roads, Va., system. Comcast meanwhile provided updated statistics on its progress with its D3 rollouts in Michigan and Colorado.

Cox said it is now offering new tiers in Hampton Roads, with top download rates up to 50 Mbps and uploads up to 5 Mbps. Cox is also providing free PowerBoost, which provides a temporary extra burst of speed for file downloads and uploads when there’s extra capacity available on the network.

Cox said it also recently increased speeds of other tiers for the 6th time in as many years. It increased the downstream speeds of its Premier service from 20 Mbps to 25 Mbps, and its Preferred tier from 10 Mbps to 15 Mbps. The company crafted 50 Mbps packages for both residential and business customers.

Meanwhile, Comcast said its rollout of D3, which it calls Project Cavalry, is progressing. According to a Comcast spokesperson, Comcast’s upgrade operations in Michigan is approximately 50 percent complete. In Colorado, Comcast’s D3 build-out is about 20 percent complete. Both are targeting completion later in 2010. 

Comcast said Project Cavalry will be complete across 80 percent to 85 percent of its footprint by the end of this year.
