Companies continue to refine and test autonomous driving technology with each passing day. Cruise GM, Waymo, and Tesla are just a few in the hunt to redefine modern transportation.
According to data analysis by news website Quartz from mandatory reports filed by the DMV, autonomous vehicle technology is improving at a quick pace. The chart below shows how many miles a self-driving car was able to go before a human driver decided or was forced to take control in 2017. The year was broken into two segments, January to June and July to November, with the latter showing significant progress.
For example, Waymo clocked an average 4,847 miles between two human interventions in the beginning of the year. However, in the July to November timeframe, that figure increased to 7,527 miles.
