There’s a need for higher amperage in contacts and connectors. That’s because of increased needs for SWAP — small size, little weight, and an ability to handle a lot of power in a very small space. And because of that, connector makers are innovating with some higher-amp contact options.
We recently did a short video with Harwin’s Jessica Engel who took us through some examples. The Harwin Datamate connector series, for example, is a 2-mm-pitch connector and traditionally has a four-finger beryllium copper contact which offers 3 A. It is considered a rugged and highly reliable device It comes with latching or jackscrew options. It can withstand some extreme shock and vibration, but in the past it hasn’t addressed that need for power. So Harwin updated the contact to now offer six points of connectivity. And the Datamate Turtle contact offers 8.5 A/contact. There’s 60% more contact wiped, and that helps handle more power.
Applications for these high-amperage connectors include aerospace, military, robotics, and motorsports, as well as other kinds of safety-critical applications.
