College gridiron is the latest sport set to get 4K treatment from AT&T’s DirecTV, beginning with Notre Dame’s home opener against the Nevada Wolfpack on Sept. 10. In April, the company offered the Masters in 4K, and followed that up with ultra high definition coverage of some MLB, UFC, PGA and Rio Olympics events. AT&T points out that it has broadcast more than 500 hours of sports content in 4K, a majority being live.
In addition to NBC’s traditional HD broadcast of the Fighting Irish football home games during the 2016 season, NBC and DirecTV will offer viewers 4K coverage of all six of those matchups. Both 4K coverage and the HD broadcast will feature the same on air commentators, camera angles and graphics.
These games mark the first live broadcasts of college football games in 4K UHD format. NBC Sports will produce them.
To access the 4K UHD content viewers need a Genie HD DVR (Model HR54 or higher) and a DirecTV 4K Ready TV or a 4K TV connected to a 4K Genie Mini.
