4K UHD TV sales are on track to grow by a further 38 percent in 2017 and will make up more than a third of the worldwide TV market, according projections released this week by Futuresource Consulting. The forecast comes on the heels of solid performance in 2016 when 4K UHD surpassed 25 percent of total TV sales across the globe, according to the firm’s data.
The ability to access sports programming in ultra high-def is often referenced as one of the bigger motivations many consumers have to crack open their wallets for a shiny new UHD TV. And AT&T for its part continues on its roll to offer a variety of sporting events in 4K UHD for DirecTV subscribers.
The latest announcement on this front is that DirecTV is again offering 4K UHD access to the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament, and is expanding the ultra high-def coverage by training 4K cameras on holes 16, 17, and 18 at the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas Resort in Irving, Texas, during all four days of the tournament (May 18-21).
DirecTV subscribers need a Genie HD DVR (Model HR54 or later) and a 4K TV connected to a 4K Genie Mini. They also need the company’s Select package or higher, 4K account authorization, and professional installation is required.
Beyond golf, DirecTV has offered access to a variety of sports recently in 4K UHD, including baseball, college football, basketball, Premier League football (soccer), and the Rio Olympics. Last December, AT&T announced that its 4K UHD video content, including live sports, was being marketed to businesses such as bars and restaurants via DirecTV. More on that is here.
