Around a decade ago, “Planet Earth” set a new benchmark for gorgeous visuals in a documentary, and now “Planet Earth II” looks like it’s aiming to up the wow factor with a 4K ultra HD (UHD) offering. Dish reports it will provide the series in 4K UHD to Hopper 3 subscribers starting on Feb. 18, with subsequent episodes airing on BBC America every Saturday night through March 25.
“We’ve heard our customers ask for more 4K content, so we’re making every effort to deliver this programming to households as its availability grows,” Vivek Khemka, Dish EVP and CTO, comments.
“Planet Earth II” explores the islands, mountains, jungles, grasslands, deserts, and cities of the world. Besides being captured in UHD, the documentary also uses advanced camera stabilization technology, remote recording, and aerial drone technology.
Last August, Dish offered NBC’s coverage of the Rio Olympics in 4K, with coverage made available on one-day delay. More on that is here.
