Deutsche Telekom and Lucent report successful testing of Lucent Technologies’ 40 Gbps optical networking technology. DT used it over a 72-mile distance.
The system is based on time-division multiplexing technology (OC-768/STM-256), transmitting voice, video and data with a single laser over a single wavelength of light, Lucent reports.
The system operates over a variety of fiber types. One system has the same capacity and takes only one-fourth of the optical fibers needed for four 10 Gbps systems. Likewise, combining the system with DWDM can produce a transmission capacity in the multiterabit range per optical fiber, Lucent says.
