EarthLink is about to start offering a residential broadband service in 80 U.S. markets, to complement the mobile service the company introduced in June.
Both service uses Clearwire’s WiMAX network, following a deal the two companies signed a year ago.
EarthLink will offer two tiers of 4G Internet-at-Home wireless Internet service; neither will have term limits. The service requires the purchase of a WiMAX modem at $79.95; there is no rental option. Both plans come with 20 hours a month of free dial-up Internet access.
A 3 Mbps tier comes with 5 GB of data usage at $29.95 a month. A 6 Mbps tier will give subscribers a monthly data allotment of 10 Gbps for $49.95.
EarthLink said it also offers incremental data packages that can be added or removed at any time for a customer-tailored data offering. Subscribers can add an extra 1 GB for $4.95, an extra 2 GB for $8.95, and 5 GB for $19.95.
Either will provide simultaneous support of up to 8 Wi-Fi enabled devices including smartphones, tablets and laptops.
“After the successful launch of our 4G Internet-on-the-Go wireless plans earlier this summer, we are pleased to now extend our wire EarthLink’s 4G Wireless Internet-a less broadband portfolio for home use,” said EarthLink executive vice president Kevin F. Brand. “
Markets where the in-home service is available include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington, D.C, Seattle and Miami.
