EasyStreet Selects VYCON’s Clean Energy Storage Flywheel Systems to Protect its Green Data Center

June 1, 2011 By ECN Staff

VYCON, a designer and manufacturer of environmentally friendly, high-speed energy storage flywheel systems, announced that cloud, managed services, and colocation provider EasyStreet Online Services has chosen to protect its state-of-the-art data center with its clean backup power systems. EasyStreet (www.easystreet.com), an EPA Green Power Partner, is committed to green technologies and its new SAS 70, Type II audited data center has a zero carbon footprint helped by approx 1MW of VYCON’s environmentally friendly VDC-XE clean energy storage systems.

The majority of data center power consumption that can be made green is the cooling system; however EasyStreet extended its green design throughout the data center including the purchase of energy efficient uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) and flywheels as traditional battery-based UPS systems could not meet EasyStreet’s sustainability initiatives nor their need for high nines (9’s) of availability. “We have two battery-based UPSs that we’ve had for almost twelve years. While the UPSs themselves have been reliable, we’ve experienced three failures of the batteries. We do preventive maintenance every quarter as the factory recommends and still we weren’t able to avoid battery failures,” said Jon Crowhurst, director of technical services for EasyStreet. “VYCON’s VDC-XE units were the perfect fit as they easily pair with highly efficient, double-conversion UPS systems and take up significantly less real estate than banks of batteries.”

As EasyStreet’s new data center becomes more populated and energy demands increase, EasyStreet plans to add more double-conversion UPSs and VYCON flywheels. Crowhurst commented, “Reliability, sustainability and having a low carbon footprint are part of the ethos of our company. This vision with actual energy savings allows us to save money which translates to saving our customers money – it’s a great win-win.”

“The use of our flywheels at EasyStreet is a great testament to not only the superb reliability of the systems, but to the green environmental aspects as well – customers don’t need to sacrifice reliability to meet their green initiatives,” said Dann McKeraghan, sales and marketing vice president for VYCON. “As EasyStreet’s power needs increase, we look forward to scaling up the VDC-XE’s to meet their energy demands.”

In addition to the recent deployment at EasyStreet, a major Texas-based Fortune 500 company has just chosen VYCON’s highly efficient flywheels for its expansion of its corporate data center. Needing to accommodate its increased power load as well as improve its carbon footprint, the data center will now be protected by 2MVA of highly efficient, double-conversion UPSs combined with 2MW of VYCON’s VDC-XE flywheel energy storage systems. By removing UPS batteries from the power infrastructure, downtime, frequent battery maintenance, replacement and expensive cooling of the batteries have been eliminated for the next 20 years – the rated lifetime of the flywheels. “For all of our customers, uptime is the top priority – especially in data center environments. The ability to mitigate power problems and quickly and reliably bridge to a facility’s engine-generator during a prolonged power outage vastly increases the reliability of the power infrastructure,” said McKeraghan.

The lifetime investment in the VYCON energy storage system is much lower than that of batteries. Over time, each VYCON VDC system deployed saves users over $200,000 when compared to using valve regulated-lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, making VYCON’s VDC system a financially attractive solution.

VYCON is realizing rapid adoption of its clean energy solutions worldwide. Recently VYCON announced the opening of a new office in Singapore in order to accommodate growth in Asian markets.
