A traffic-free life is certainly a happy thought, and The Boring Company wants to turn that idea into the real deal. Founded by Elon Musk in 2016, the company plans to take the solution to city congestion underground by building a multi-layered tunnel system.
About a month ago, Musk released test footage of the transportation tunnel. The latest test run demonstrates a top travel speed of 125 mph (201 km/h).
Another piece of the puzzle is designing the vehicle that’ll zip through this underground system. Below you can see the company’s vision of what that design might look like, with this iteration aimed at transporting pedestrians and bicyclists.
“An electric skate is a flat plate on wheels propelled by an electric motor,” according to the company. By using an electric skate design, the tunnel’s diameter reduces to less than 14 feet, which significantly cuts costs. The fully autonomous and stabilized construction reduces human error and allows for rides at 125 mph in urban settings, increasing both safety and speed.
As depicted in the photo above, multiple people, goods, and automobiles can be transported, while maintaining its status as a zero-emission vehicle. If the picture resembles the practical design, soon pedestrians will sit or stand in an underground, glass-encased, autonomous electric structure hurtling at triple-digit speeds—what a way to travel.
To get a sense of how your personal car will utilize this tunnel, watch The Boring Company video below. If you look closely, the glass-encased design even makes a late appearance.
