Epix is broadening its TV Everywhere reach by developing apps for Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PSP3) and PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) systems.
The PS3 app is slated to launch in the first quarter of this year, while the PS Vita app will roll out this spring. The apps will give authenticated subscribers access to more than 3,000 titles, including a high-definition lineup of new releases, such as “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “The Hunger Games” and “Thor.” The video lineup also includes Epix original programming, featuring concert, comedy and sporting events.
The Epix app will be available to PlayStation Network members in the United States as a free download from the PlayStation Store.
“We’re thrilled to join forces with Sony Computer Entertainment to offer subscribers a unique and unparalleled experience. This is another important step in our mission to provide the best content in every way consumers want it, creating better entertainment experiences using our premium content, and by working with technology partners and our distribution partners,” said Epix CEO and President Mark Greenberg.
The ability to stream full movies and concerts on the PS3 and PS Vita systems is included as part of the Epix premium subscription service available through cable, satellite and telco distributors. Launched in 2009, Epix has deals in place with Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Dish Network, Mediacom Communications, the NCTC, Suddenlink Communications and Verizon. Epix’s service is available to more than 30 million homes across the nation through its distribution partners.
“We’ve partnered with Epix to deliver high-quality programming to Dish customers online and through Dish-branded mobile and tablet apps,” said Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming at Dish Network. “A leader in authenticated multi-platform delivery, Epix has established an innovative agreement with PlayStation that provides yet another outlet for our customers to access its excellent movie content.”
Epix has laid claim to being the first premium network to launch on Xbox consoles, first on Android tablets and phones, and first on Roku players.
Epix is a movie channel that offers Hollywood titles, classic feature films, original series and comedy specials from Paramount, MGM, Lionsgate and other studios. The video content is available to authenticated subscribers on hundreds of devices, including iPads, iPhones, Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players.
Epix is a joint venture between Viacom, its Paramount Pictures unit, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Lionsgate.
