A research project, collaborated by Disney and researchers from MIT and Carnegie Mellon University, is redefining how real VR and augmented-reality experiences actually feel. The team has created a prototype for a wearable called Force Jacket, according to Engadget and Disney.
The jacket is designed to ensure the user feels physical sensations such as getting punched, hugged, or what researchers created, a feeling of a snake moving across the body.
The physical sensations are activated from a collection of airbags and sensors that provides sensations all over the upper body with force and high frequency vibrations.
This jacket could change the future of VR and truly put users in another world that is both virtually and physically there. Currently, haptic-feedback technologies are mostly limited to vibrations and handheld devices. The Disney research team hopes this will provide an entire new realm for immersive reality.
