Facebook on Thursday enabled an option offering live video streaming for everyone using the social media app on an iPhone in the United States.
Testing for the feature began in December.
According to Facebook, the new feature will allow Facebook app users to broadcast a live video status update with their chosen audience. During the broadcast, users will see the number of live viewers along with the names of those tuning in and a stream of real-time comments.
Live video broadcasts will be saved on a user’s Timeline like any other video once the message is complete, Facebook said.
Facebook said it plans to roll out the feature to the rest of the world over the coming weeks and is also working to bring live video to Android users.
The feature appears to be Facebook’s response to Twitter’s Periscope application, which also allow live video streaming.
