Comcast’s NBCUniversal today announced that the Dec. 3 live broadcast of The Wiz Live! on NBC will be accompanied by video description, making it accessible to viewers with visual disabilities.
According to Comcast, video description is a narration track that is included between the natural pauses in dialogue that describes the visual elements of a show or movie like facial expressions, settings, costumes and stage direction.
It’s a first for nationwide live broadcasts in the United States and FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is already excitedly cheering the use of the technology.
“During this time of year, we’re reminded that everyone should have access to the joy of the season. That’s why it’s ‘genius’ that, for the first time, Comcast and NBC Universal will enable Americans with vision loss to enjoy a live broadcast show, The Wiz Live!, through visual description technology. Now, Americans with visual impairments across the country will be able to fully experience a lion get his courage, a scarecrow get his brain, and a tinman find his heart through this technology. It’s a historic first for live TV entertainment,” Wheeler said in a statement.
The video description technology will be available where secondary audio program (SAP) feeds are available. Comcast and NBC partnered with Descriptive Video Works on the technology.
