Nokia on Tuesday said that Frontier Communications and Rochester-based ISP Greenlight Networks have both selected the vendor’s XGS-PON solution to help deliver faster broadband speeds and services to business and residential customers.
Frontier will deploy the technology in its California, Florida and Texas markets through a phased roll out, starting with the greater Dallas and Fort Worth areas of Texas.
Using the XGS-PON technology, Frontier can leverage its existing fiber network to eventually deliver up to 10 Gbps symmetrical internet speeds, according to Nokia. The vendor also noted that its next-generation PON supports both traditional and software defined access network (SDAN) approachyg, so that operators can shift to SDN when they’re ready.
“Next Generation PON technologies such as XGS-PON are increasingly being deployed as demand for ultra-broadband applications and services continue to grow,” said Julie Kunstler, principal analyst at Ovum, in a statement. “Providing operators with the ability to use the same passive and active plants, XGS-PON solutions like Nokia’s can be quickly deployed and used to capture 10Gbps service opportunities that help operators to improve the return on their existing fiber network investments.”
“We are excited to be working with Nokia on solutions that bring multi-Gigabit services to the home and quickly scale to 10 Gigabits and beyond,” Frontier CTO and EVP Steve Gable said. “Nokia’s platform will enable us to effectively support xDSL, P2P fiber, GPON and 10Gbps PON requirements and gain the flexibility to seamlessly evolve into future PON technologies. Nokia’s solutions will enhance the customer experience by offering a Frontier fiber-powered internet that is as fast as it is reliable.”
Greenlight Networks will also be upgrading its network, which spans multiple municipalities in the Greater Rochester area, using Nokia’s XGS-PON offering. Nokia said it will enable Greenlight to “seamlessly” shift from GPON, delivering 2.5 Gbps, to XGS-PON, capable of 10 Gbps, using the same access node.
The company noted Greenlight’s will be the first XGS-PON deployment in New York.
“Greenlight is constantly looking at ways we can deliver new services that fit every customer need. We pride ourselves on offering the fastest internet speeds available in the markets we serve and Nokia’s XGS-PON technology will play a critical part in our ability to deliver these services to our customers,” said Greenlight CEO Mark Murphy. “With Nokia’s next-generation PON fiber solution we will be able to deliver the latest technologies, applications, products and services quickly and reliably to our customers and ensure they have access to the ultra-broadband speeds and capacity they require now and in the future.”
