FTTH Conference roundup (Day 2)

October 4, 2004 By Jeff Baumgartner

More news emerged from this week’s FTTH Conference and Expo in Orlando:

• UTOPIA leaders take ‘STAR’ award

Two key contributors to the Utah Telecommunications Open Infrastructure Agency (UTOPIA) came away with the 2004 Fiber-to-the-Home Council STAR award, which recognizes leadership in the fiber-based services arena.

The Council bestowed the award on Paul Morris and David Shaw, two individuals heading up the UTOPIA project, which aims to connect fiber to about 170,000 homes and businesses in 14 Utah cities. In turn, wholesale providers will offer services on the network.

Morris is the executive director of UTOPIA and is serving as its CEO. Shaw serves as the project’s general counsel.

• HomeNet, NetCentrex team on VoIP

HomeNet Communications (formerly Video Internet Broadcasting Corp.) has hooked up with NetCentrix Inc. to deliver IP voice services.

The companies said they will offer the service over small- and medium-sized fiber-to-the-home networks. Under the deal, HomeNet will use NetCentex’s MyCall VoIP platform.

HomeNet plans to use MyCall to support services it will deliver over iProvo, a fiber-to-the-home grid being built in Provo, Utah.

• ADC checks for fiber-readiness

ADC has launched the FTTX Service Pack, a provisional service designed to help carriers determine whether their central offices are ready for fiber-fed services. The service also determines what changes need to be made to ensure that the CO can handle the high-capacity demand of fiber-to-the-X deployments.

More specifically, the service takes a look at space demands within the CO, the impact of infrastructure changes, and the possible demands for more electrical power

• Wave7 nets housing deployment

BroadRiver Digital plans to deploy Wave7 Optics Inc. ‘s Last Mile Link system to support a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network in Georgia.

The deployment, set for Q4 of 2004, will usher in IP-based video, voice and data services for Carriage Ridge, a housing development located about 70 miles east of Atlanta in the Lake Oconee region.

BroadRiver is a subsidiary of Germany-based HKL LC.
