Fujitsu Network Communications has launched a “hybrid” Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) architecture that can support Ethernet- and legacy TDM-based services.
The system, which combines CWDM (coarse wave division multiplexing) and GPON, is designed to provide more capacity than the older BPON fiber-to-the-premises platform, which supports downstream rates of 622 Mbps and upstream rates of 155 Mbps. Newer GPON-based fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technologies support 2.488 Gbps down/1.244 Gbps up, or about 75 Mbps per home.
Fujitsu noted that its G.986-compliant system will enable current GPON networks to provide even faster speeds down the road without the need to change out deployed Optical Network Terminals (ONTs).
