GCI Communications, which is Alaska’s biggest telecommunications company, said it would launch its 1-Gig “fiber re:D” service in Juneau before the end of 2016 after previously announcing the fiber service would be available in Anchorage next year.
Like Google Fiber and AT&T, GCI is asking its customers to go to its website to express their interest in the 1 Gigabit offering, which will determine the neighborhoods that will get it first.
GCI also announced that its 4G LTE wireless service was four times faster than other providers. In an independent, third-party speed test, GCI said it provided significantly faster wireless service than either AT&T or Verizon in Juneau.
“For more than 30 years, GCI has been committed to providing Alaskans with the latest communications technology, and providing Juneau with the fastest possible broadband speeds through our fiber re:D service will be another example of that,” said GCI Senior Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Services Paul Landes. “At GCI, we know that people use technology to enhance their experiences throughout every aspect of life, and as Alaska’s premier telecommunications provider we’re proud to deliver this enhanced service to the Juneau community.”
Earlier this month, GCI announced it had inked an LTE roaming agreement with T-Mobile that provides its wireless customers access to an LTE network from Fairbanks, Alaska to Miami, Florida.
