Brazilian cable and satellite TV provider Globosat is set to broadcast the final three games of the 2014 World Cup live in Ultra HD, using technology from Broadcom and from Elemental Technologies.
Globosat will make the signal available only to selected subscribers and pay-TV operators in Brazil.
The vendors say this will be the first broadcast of Ultra HD (4K) at 60 frames per second and with 10-bit Rec 2020 color.
4K demonstrations to date commonly max out at 50 fps with 8-bit color.
Some of the features of the demonstration:
- Broadcom, Elemental and Globosat have deployed an end-to-end 4K HEVC workflow
- Satellite uplink and signal receiving systems provided by Globosat
- Decoding provided by Broadcom’s video decoder system-on-a-chip (SoC) with high efficiency video codec (HEVC) compression
- Encoding provided by Elemental Live video encoders
- Recording and display provided by 4K digital cinema cameras for playback on commercial 4K TVs
