Google Fiber is moving away from traditional TV offerings as it launches internet-only services in two new markets.
In a blog post, Google Fiber’s Cathy Fogler, head of sales and marketing, says that when the high-speed internet comes to Louisville and San Antonio, the company will focus on broadband without the traditional TV add-on.
“More and more people are moving away from traditional methods of viewing television content,” Fogler writes, “Customers today want to control what, where, when, and how they get content. They want to do it their way, and we want to help them.”
Markets where the service has already launched won’t see a change to their TV offering, though Fogler notes, more customers are choosing internet-only plans.
ArsTechnica reports that traditional TV customers aren’t a large portion of Google Fiber’s customer base, with the most recent estimate by DSLReports showing the service has slightly more than 84,000 paying TV customers.
