The annual developer conference Google I/O is currently in full swing. Adding to the slew of AR- and VR-related announcements is a new technology called WorldSense.
Before we dive into the details, let’s transport back to last autumn, when Google first launched Daydream View, a VR headset that is both comfortable and easy to use. Many phones on the market today are compatible with the Daydream, and more are on the way, such as the Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, and LG’s next flagship phone debuting later this year.
Now, Google has introduced a new category of virtual reality devices, dubbed standalone VR headsets. Users don’t need a phone or a PC—all you have to do is put the device on, and you’re ready to have some fun.
These all-in-one gadgets feature new headset tracking technology called WorldSense. By using position tracking, the device follows the user’s exact movements in space without needing the help of external sensors.
Google and Qualcomm worked closely together to create the initial reference design. From there, partners such as HTC VIVE and Lenovo are working off those blueprints to deliver the first round of WorldSense-infused devices, schedule to come out later this year.
