Cisco announced that Korean operator Hanaro Telecom is using Cisco’s gear for what it claims is the world’s largest deployment of a 100 Mbps broadband service.
The wideband deployment, which is now reaching more than 200,000 customers, is using Cisco’s technology that is based on the downstream channel-bonding specification that is defined in DOCSIS 3.0.
Hanaro, which leads the Korean market in the deployment of high-speed HFC Internet services, started the deployment in April, which gave it a leg up on its competitors for delivering a 100 Mbps wideband service.
“We were looking for a technology solution to enable a timely launch of our 100 Mbps broadband services over HFC while increasing density and reducing cost,” said Chan Woong Park, senior vice president of Hanaro Telecom’s Network Technology Unit, in a statement. “Cisco has worked with us to deploy an industry leading cable modem termination system for broadband services and its engineering excellence has enabled a smooth and rapid service rollout.”
Cisco’s IP NGN infrastructure uses the company’s uBR10012 cable modem termination system (CMTS), which Hanaro deployed to provide bandwidth for its VOD IPTV service.
