Harris joins SCTE as director of advanced network technologies

January 27, 2010 By Mike Robuck

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers today announced that veteran trainer and network administrator Steve Harris has been hired as its director of advanced network technologies program development.

Steve HarrisHarris was recognized by the SCTE as its Learning and Development Professional of the Year in 2007, and his background includes 10 years of higher education teaching experience and 18 years of multi-platform network systems experience.

With the SCTE, Harris is tasked with leading the creation and implementation of educational programs and technical resources – including Live Learning, Virtual Classroom, SCTE Primers, Tech Tips, Implication Papers and other activities – within the organization’s Professional Development arm.

“As we continue to expand the scope of our programs and build value for the industry, it is important that we build a strong knowledge base on a wide variety of technical disciplines,” said Marv Nelson, senior vice president of strategic initiatives for the SCTE. “Steve Harris has the cable expertise and the extensive network knowledge and skills that will bring clear benefits to our members and the cable system operators who employ them.”

Most recently with Comcast University, the SCTE said Harris was instrumental in developing customized Level 2 training programs that are designed to increase the technical proficiency of Comcast employees. Working in conjunction with corporate, national and local executives and staff, Harris helped create a regimen that included technologies and techniques for legacy and next-generation residential and business services.

Prior to joining Comcast University, Harris was a continuing education professor and network administrator for Camden County College in New Jersey, where he developed high-level training programs for Comcast, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and other companies.

A holder of 35 IT industry certifications, Harris holds an associate’s degree in electric engineering technology from Camden County College and coursework in computer science from Rowan University.

Harris also has roots within the SCTE, having served as a board member of the New Jersey Chapter of SCTE since 2005 and vice president since 2008. He has served since 2008 on the board of the directors of the SCTE South Jersey Chapter.
