Hitachi tackles cable’s bandwidth crunch

May 12, 2010 By Traci Patterson

Hitachi Communication Technologies America has introduced 10G EPON and 10G DePON ONUs and line cards for its Salira product line.

The offerings give cable operators a fiber access infrastructure capable of supporting the bandwidth needed for such things as HDTV, 3-D TV, videoconferencing, cloud computing, rich media files, gaming, transparent LAN services, MEF services and other business applications.

Hitachi said its 10 Gbps DePON offers the combination of high bandwidth, low cost and effective service control required for profitable high-volume business and residential services.

Hitachi’s work on integrating DOCSIS management with the IEEE GEPON physical layer has paved the way for DOCSIS control of this new 10 Gbps infrastructure. Reusing DOCSIS management with 10 Gbps fiber access is part of Hitachi’s strategy of using existing standards-based equipment for migration from HFC to fiber access.

Hitachi’s 10G DePON “has the bandwidth and features our customers need to create services today and in the future,” according to Takashi Mori, president of Hitachi’s Salira Division.
