Honda has released its new fuel cell car, the Clarity, for limited use on the streets of Japan.
Honda said Thursday that it will only lease the zero-emissions five-seater to government organizations and businesses at first, with a goal of selling just 200 of the $67,000 vehicles in Japan during the first year. The cost of leasing the vehicle should be around $880 per month before government incentives are applied.
The company said Clarity will make its American debut later this year in California, and will sell for approximately $60,000, and lease for less than $500 per month.
The vehicle can travel up to 470 miles on a full tank.
Honda’s aspirations for environmentally friendly vehicles is high: company President Takahiro Hachigo said last month that two-thirds of vehicles sold by the company by 2030 will produce zero-emissions. That figure includes electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-ins, and of course, fuel cell vehicles.
