Streaming service Hulu is eyeing the acquisition of the films screened at the recent Sundance Film Festival in a bid to become a distributor of original movies, Bloomberg reported.
The move comes as Hulu looks to expand its catalogue of exclusive content in a bid to better compete with fellow streaming services Netflix and Amazon. Hulu currently has more than 500 content partners.
Last week, the service signed an agreement with IFC Films that will make Hulu the exclusive streaming home for all future documentary releases from the company, including those from IFC Films, Sundance Selects and IFC Midnight. The multi-year agreement begins this fall, the company said. The documentaries will be available on Hulu’s No Commercials and Limited Commercial subscription plans.
Hulu currently has nearly 9 million subscribers.
