IBC: Liberty Global initiates 120 Mbps+ speeds in Europe

September 17, 2008 By Brian Santo

AMSTERDAM – UPC Netherlands is scheduled to rollout a consumer Internet connectivity service with a throughput of up to 120 Mbps, using EuroDOCSIS 3.0 technology.

UPC Netherlands, part of Liberty Global, believes it will be the first cable operator in continental Europe to deliver a consumer service with a download speed of 120 Mbps. The service will be called UPC Fiber Power 120.

Liberty Global said it expects to begin similar services in Switzerland and Austria before the end of this year, and in most, if not all, of its European markets by the end of 2009.

Another Liberty Global property, J:Com, introduced a similar service with top speeds of 160 Mbps in Japan in 2007; the success of that service is said to have far exceeded expectations. J:Com added more than 55,000 subscribers to its 160 Mbps product since Q4 2007, and more than 25 percent of new subscribers are taking the product where it’s available.

Liberty Global President and CEO Mike Fries said: “The launch of our Fiber Power broadband services in Europe marks another milestone in cable’s long-standing superiority of DSL. Hands down, this will be the fastest and most robust broadband service available in our markets.”

UPC Netherlands demonstrated its UPC Fiber Power 120 service at the IBC trade show in Amsterdam, which concluded yesterday.
