IBM announced Tuesday it has acquired cloud-based video service company Clearleap, Inc. in the latest of what has been a string of strategic purchases.
According to IBM, the acquisition will allow the company to use Clearleap’s open API framework and scalable video platform to keep up with consumer demand for video management services. IBM said Clearleap’s APIs will be offered through its Bluemix platform in 2016.
“IBM is focused on being an essential partner to the rapidly changing M&E industry by helping our clients deliver personalized content to the right customer in real time anywhere in the world,” said IBM’s general manager of Global Media and Entertainment Industry Steven Canepa. “The combination of Clearleap with our proven analytics and hybrid cloud capabilities will deliver exciting new video solutions that will fundamentally change communications across every industry.”
IBM did not disclose the financial details of the transaction.
The deal is one of several acquisitions IBM has recently pursued to enhance its cloud profile.
In 2014, IBM completed its acquisition of Aspera Inc., a company that specializes in secure, high-speed transmission of massive data files. Last month, IBM also purchased Cleversafe, a developer and manufacturer of object-based storage software and appliances.
Combined with today’s Clearleap purchase, IBM said the technology from those buys will be incorporated on its OBM Cloud to “help clients more quickly store, index and retrieve video content through the cloud.”
