Google is looking at launching its own pay-per-view service through YouTube by the end of the year.
Google’s goal of using its search capabilities combined with its YouTube Web portal are coming closer to fruition now that talks have turned serious with Hollywood studios.
The Financial Times reported that negotiations between Google and content providers have taken on greater urgency in recent weeks. Google is reportedly looking at first launching a pay-per-view service in the United States before adding additional countries down the road.
According to the story, the movies would be streamed for about $5 for newer titles that would be released the same as they’re available on DVD, Apple’s iTunes store and Amazon.
Hollywood studios are interested in partnering with Google because the additional income would offset the decline in DVD sales.
