The FCC may be close to finally issuing some rules about the use of so-called white spaces – the spectrum between broadcast TV channels that now goes unused.
The Wall Street Journal reports the FCC is being aggressively lobbied by companies such as Microsoft and Google, which believe more wireless competition will provide more markets for their goods and services.
In 2008, the FCC approved the use of white space spectrum for wireless services, but broadcasters and other interests were opposed, fearing interference with their signals.
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is on record that he wants to develop rules and issue them by October.
