Shaw Communications is set for a trial run of its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Vancouver and Calgary.
The Canadian operator was among the first in North America to provide a 100 Mbps broadband tier based on DOCSIS 3.0. With its FTTH network, it will offer speeds up to 1 Gbps.
The test will encompass multiple-dwelling units, single-family homes, as well as lucrative small & midsized businesses, according to a blog report by Zacks Investment Research.
Zacks said Shaw management did not comment on whether it will continue with DOCSIS 3.0 or eventually upgrade all its subscribers to the FTTH network. The analyst firm speculates that Shaw may be relying on FTTH as a means to get to unicast quicker, to stave off competition from the likes of Telus.
