Infinera shows scalability to 8 Tbps

Infinera will display two advances in optical networking at the Cable-Tec Expo this week in Philadelphia.

First up is its new ILS2 line system with up to 160 DWDM channels in the C-band, and future scalability of up to 8 Tbps. In addition, the company will be conducting a demo transmitting 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) traffic live in its booth, using a 100 GbE Infinera Tributary Adapter Module running in a production DTN system.

The ILS2, which will be released this summer, employs a 25 GHz grid to pack 160 DWDM channels in the C-band, for total capacity of 1.6 Tbps when used with today’s Infinera DTN line cards (with capacity of 100 Gbps per line card). The company believes that the future introduction of next-generation photonic integrated circuits (PICs) will boost ILS2 system capacity to a future 8 Tbps.

Infinera has developed a new silicon-based platform for passive PICs that supports wavelength multiplexing on a 25 GHz grid.

The ILS2 also offers a new optical bypass feature, which enables Infinera systems to pass through a portion of traffic in sites where add/drop is not required.

The company’s Bandwidth Virtualization enables an Infinera network to deliver a variety of services, including GbE and 10 GbE, over an existing optical infrastructure without significant optical re-engineering.

Infinera will conduct a live demo of 100 GbE services, developed in conjunction with partners Ixia and Avago Technologies. The demo implements the new Multi-Lane Distribution protocol architecture, an enabling technology for economical 100 GbE solutions. In the demo, a 100 GbE Tributary Adapter Module (TAM), installed in an Infinera line card, will transmit and receive 100 GbE services, with performance metrics viewable on the Ixia XM2 chassis.
