Innovative smart home system lands in the Netherlands

DigitalSTROM, the Swiss-German company behind a smart home system that utilizes a house’s existing electrical network, announced its expansion into the Dutch market on Thursday, Jan. 2.

The Netherlands will be the fourth core market for the company, which will be initially breaking into the market via sales partners. If the venture continue to grow the company, as it has been growing steadily throughout 2014, corporate activities may also be launched in the Netherlands, the press release said.

In the digitalSTROM smart home system, domestic appliances and electrical devices such as lights and switches are fitted with an intelligent digitalSTROM terminal block (about the size and shape of a LEGO brick,) and high-voltage chip. With these, electrical devices in the digitalSTROM smart home interact and communicate with each other.

The terminal blocks easily fit into standard flush-mounted jacks. Devices making up the in-home system need to have either had a compatible integrated high-volt chip installed at the factory, or to be looped in with the terminal box via the corresponding power cable.

 Once installed, the network can guide lights to create ambiance, monitor locks and other home security, synch with household devices and Nest, and more.

“We see big potential for our smart home system in the Netherlands,” said Martin Vesper, CEO of digitalSTROM, in a press release. “Building activity in the Netherlands is almost exclusively limited to work on existing buildings. Furthermore, the Dutch are very open to technological innovations. With digitalSTROM we are offering Dutch customers an innovative, stable solution for their homes which not only provides a digital lifestyle, but is also an integral networking concept.”

In November, digitalSTROM partnered with TIBCO Software, a California-based software company, which gives digital STROM access to TIBCO’s high-performance platform and intelligent process modeling for increasingly complex smart home applications.
