Despite the fact that 802.11ad chips are expensive to manufacture, provide a very short range, and are not a recognized international standard, Intel and Qualcomm are still placing bets on the free and open 60 GHz band of 802.11ad. The two companies recently — and successfully — demonstrated multi-gigabit interoperability between their two respective 801.11ad WiGig solutions.
The bet may well be well-placed. At 8Gpbs, AD is 50 times fast than WiFi N. Think wireless devices that feel as fast at locally connected devices. According to Intel, “802.11ad will transform the experience of Wi-Fi users, be it in their offices, homes or even in public places. Bringing the vast, new spectrum in 60 GHz band to Wi-Fi’s fold, 802.11ad will be one of the potent tools to address burgeoning data demand in homes, enterprises and carrier networks.”
