Intel has acquired Recon Instruments for an alleged $175 million, gaining a portfolio of wearables including the augmented reality goggles called Recon Jet.
Recon also produces heads-up displays and other digital augmentations for sports eyewear. All 75 of their employees will join Intel to work on wearables in the New Devices Group. It’s possible that Intel will also leverage the new workforce to build Internet of Things-compatible devices; they purchased smartwatch manufacturer Basis in March of 2014, and have partnerships with eyewear and jewelry makers. Recon will also benefit from the deal by having easy access to Intel semiconductors.
