Independent ISP Sonic used a blog late last week to announce its gigabit fiber service rollout for the City by the Bay. Needless to say, it received significantly less attention than Google Fiber’s plans for the same area.
Sonic’s Fusion Fiber service reportedly delivers Internet access at 1 Gbps for $40 a month, and is currently available for ordering or pre-ordering in San Francisco’s Sunset and Richmond Districts. Fusion also includes home phone service with nationwide calling, plus international calling to fixed lines in more than 60 countries.
In its “Fixing the Internet” video, the company asks consumers to mutiny against their current providers because “download speeds in America are slower than in lots of countries most of us can’t even find on a map.” Sonic goes on to ask its potential customers to “join our movement” and calls out “big Internet companies,” which are pictured as vaguely resembling the old man Monopoly game mascot chomping on a stogie.
Other cities that the company serves include the California communities of Brentwood, Sebastopol, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa and Petaluma.
