JDS Uniphase Corp. is alight today with an announcement that BellSouth Corp. has selected its WaveReady passive optical network transport technology for deployment in the telco’s next-generation network, now under construction.
The WaveReady PON gear will be used in the outer loop portion of BellSouth’s new fiber network, with shipments expected to begin within a year. The value of the contract was not released.
Using wave division multiplexing, WaveReady can multiply the capacity of a single-mode optical fiber to as many as eight channels. That will come in handy as BellSouth extends Gigabit Ethernet connections from its edge routers to its Internet Protocol Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs), according to Bill Smith, BellSouth’s chief technology officer.
“In cases where we do not have a dedicated fiber available because the fiber is already in use, the CWDM approach will allow multiple wavelengths of light to share the fiber,” he added.
