JDSU handhelds test optical networks

January 19, 2010 By Brian Santo

JDSU introduced a family of handheld optical test instruments and kits to support enterprise and broadband service providers’ technicians.

There are six meters in JDSU’s Optical SmartPocket handheld line, with at least one meter available to address most network structures and test applications, the company said.

The family of optical instruments and kits includes JDSU Optical SmartPocket Power Meters and Light Sources.

Optical SmartPocket Power Meters (OLP-3x) offer fast and accurate measurements of optical power levels on single-mode and multimode optical networks. Mainly used to measure optical power level (dBm) in facilities, telecommunications networks or cable television fiber-optic networks, they can also be combined with LED or laser light sources for insertion loss measurement, JDSU said.

JDSU Optical SmartPocket Light Sources (OLS-3x) can measure insertion loss and test the continuity in multimode data communications and local area networks, as well as single-mode telecommunications and cable television-multimedia networks.

Meanwhile, shares of JDSU rose Tuesday after an RBC Capital Markets analyst upgraded the communications equipment maker to “Outperform,” saying its test and measurement and optical components businesses could improve this year.

JDSU shares rose 52 cents, or 6.3 percent, to $8.73 in midday trading. The stock has ranged from $2.21 to $9.13 over the past year.

In an investor note, analyst Mark Sue raised his rating from “Market Perform” and his price target by $2 to $12.

Sue said that JDSU is still reporting uneven quarterly reports, and he doesn’t think its growth will be smooth from quarter to quarter. However, he thinks strength in wireline and wireless products may help the company increase revenue and earnings and improve its cash generation.

“With product pruning, lean manufacturing and cost control, JDSU may enter a period of operating margin improvements,” he wrote.

The company makes communications equipment, testing instruments, optical components for machines like photocopiers and lasers.
