Knology is close to a systems upgrade in Knoxville that will allow it to roll out a free upgrade of its DOCSIS 3.0 tier to some of its residential and business customers.
Knology said the free DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade was “coming soon,” and it will also include better security and reliability features.
“This free upgrade will put Knology Internet customers at the highest level of speed, security and performance,” said Tony Palermo, vice president of marketing for Knology. “DOCSIS 3.0 will dramatically add to the enjoyment level for residential customers and increase productivity for our business customers.”
Current residential and business customers will be upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 as follows at no additional charge: Residential Standard, up to 15 Mbps down/2 Mbps up; Edge, up to 30 Mbps down/5 Mbps up; Business Basic, up to 6 Mbps down/1 Mbps up; Select, up to 16 Mbps down/2 Mbps up.
Knology’s existing business customers and all new business customers can purchase any of the following levels of service: Basic, up to 8 Mbps down/1 Mbps up; Select, up to 16 Mbps down/2 Mbps up; Business Xtra, up to 22 Mbps down/2 Mbps up; Business Max, up to 30 Mbps down/5 Mbps up; and Business Ultimate, up to 50 Mbps down/5 Mbps up.
Additional features will include security enhancements, such as support for 128-bit Advanced Encryption Security (AES), as well as IPv6.
Palermo said Knology was working on several “next step” projects for enhanced services for its customers, including upstream channel bonding. Knology is deploying Arris’ cable modems, along with several other certified vendors, in Knoxville. Knology is also using Arris’ cable modem termination systems (CMTSs) in Knoxville, but Arris is one of three CMTS vendors throughout the company’s footprint.
Knoxville is the latest Knology market to receive this systems upgrade. Residential and business customers in the following cities already have access to the wideband tiers: Huntsville, Ala.; Panama City, Fla.; Columbus, Ga.; Charleston, S.C.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Rapid City, S.D.
