The future display market – as flat as possible, energy-efficient and high-resolution – will be showcased at electronica 2010 from November 9-12, 2010, the world’s leading trade show for components, systems and applications. LED, OLED and AMOLED technologies are expected to create a technical revolution in e-signage, smart phone displays and television sets.
High growth expected for LEDs, OLEDs and AMOLEDs
According to the market research company iSuppli, AMOLED usage will grow at an average annual rate of 55% through 2015. Much of this growth will be fuelled by the rapidly growing smart phone market which will use AMOLEDs in their displays. Since an AMOLED display does not require any backlight, energy consumption is reduced and the display can be just a few millimeters thick. AMOLED displays can also be printed on nearly every material and are extremely elastic, which might allow them to be printed onto clothing.
The quarterly “OLED Shipment and Forecast Report” by DisplaySearch shows that OLED displays will reach a market volume of $5.5 billion with an average annual growth rate of 37% by 2015.
However, market researchers do not believe that smart phone displays will be the most important long term source of income in regards to OLEDSs and AMOLEDs. Television sets will account for an additional market of $1.92 billion in 2015. (source: DisplaySearch).
It is also anticipated that conventional LED sales will double from $6.7 billion in 2009 to $14.3 billion in 2013. The LED market is also expected to exhibit strong growth, driven by the wide range of applications for very bright LEDs (source: iSuppli).
LED manufacturers participating in electronica 2010
Samsung will present its new LED large-format e-signage displays at electronica this year. Samsung’s EX(n) series combine small size and energy efficiency. Weighing just 15 kilograms and with a depth of 40 millimeters, they use 60% less energy compared with conventional displays and rank among the lightest in their class. The new LED SyncMaster 400EX(n), 460EX(n) and 550EX(n) with screen sizes of 40 inches, 46 inches and 55 inches, respectively, are especially suitable for digital signage in airports, shopping centers and conference venues. They feature full HD resolution with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
Kingbright Electronic Europe GmbH will present the first dome lens SMD-LED in a 0603 package. This new helios SMD LED has a 60° viewing angle and delivers up to 3000 mcd@20mA of red light. The industrial component complies with temperature specifications between -40°C and +80°C and was developed especially for the automatic “pick-and-place” mounting process.
dilitronics GmbH will demonstrate its innovative “controLED technology” which overcomes temperature-, age- and production-induced inhomogeneity. Thanks to an easily programmable microcontroller, the parameters of every LED can be controlled precisely, allowing each LED to operate at its full potential.
Power Systems GmbH+Co.KG , Deutschland will present its new PS-LPL0801-01 backlight converter for industrial, medical electronics and lighting systems. With an output power of 9W, it can control a large number of LED backlight systems in TFT displays. With a flexible 8-output interconnection, LED current from 15 to 240mA can be attained. The converter’s small size (64 x 32 x 9 mm) is easily integrated in customer applications.
Innovations in OLED technology
Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED) typically run at lower current produce less luminance than conventional silicon-based LEDs. Since they are fabricated on a flexible, organic substrate, OLEDs are flatter, use less energy and exhibit higher contrast than conventional displays.
Data Modul AG will present passive-matrix OLEDs at this year’s show. One highlight will be the new 14 cm (5.5″) PMOLED, a monochrome (green) product with a resolution of 256 x 64 pixels. It is currently the largest PMOLED available with dimensions of 146 x 65 x 2 mm. It is intended for medical monitors.
Display / e-Signage Forum during electronica
electronica 2010 will hold a Display/e-Signage Forum at stand A3.221 on Tuesday, November 9th with the theme “big sizes – low energy – 3D-touch”. This forum will include both a “speaker’s corner” and a presentation area where exhibitors can promote innovative products.
