LG is moving into the medical imaging devices market, the company announced this week.

LG Electronics USA Business Solutions will produce clinical and surgical monitors. The move, the company contends, leverages its experience with flat-panel display technologies.

“LG is diving head-first into the U.S. medical imaging device market with advanced display technologies designed to improve the accuracy, quality, and efficiency of diagnostic procedures,” said Kimun Paik, senior vice president of LG Electronics USA Business Solutions, in a statement.

“To serve this highly competitive market, we plan to build on LG’s position both as a worldwide leader in premium display technologies and as the largest provider of hospital patient room TVs in the U.S.”

New monitors and a new radiography device are being previewed this week at the Radiological Society of North America at Chicago’s McCormick Place.

The LG 8MP Clinical Review Monitor is a 27-inch in-plane switching monitor driving 3840 x 2160 pixels designed to streamline workflows. It offers enhanced brightness levels, wide viewing angles, minimal color shift, and accurate imaging. It’s Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine compliant, which means grayscale tones are corrected to maintain image accuracy.

The company’s new LG 8MP Surgical Monitor is an operating theater monitor that allows surgeons who prefer minimally invasive techniques to distinguish between different types of tissues and blood vessels with more than 99 percent coverage of the RGB color space. It features brightness levels up to 800 nits.

The Digitalized X-Ray Detector for Radiography, which is being displayed in Chicago this week, produces radiography images in seconds with 16-bit image processing capabilities and a pixel pitch range as small as 127 µ.
