Liberty Global-owned German cable operator Unitymedia is moving ahead with plans to offer its customers broadband internet speeds of 400 mbps, the company announced Wednesday.
The service, which roll out at the start of February, will initially be available to around 40 percent of cable households in the operator’s footprint, including those in Frankfurt. Unitymedia also covers the North-Rhine Westphalia, Hessen and Baden-Württemberg areas, the company said.
Unitymedia CEO Lutz Schüler said the company was setting “ambitious targets” in an effort to extend the company’s lead in the market.
Unitymedia said it has also deployed more than 1,000 public Wi-Fi access points in 100 cities across the North-Rhine Westphalia, Hessen and Baden-Württemberg areas, and plans to further increase the density of Wi-Fi in Germand cities in 2016 as part of an “overarching power offensive.”
The company said it is also preparing to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 and said hybrid fiber coaxial technology is “ideal” for a reliable infrastructure in the future.
Unitymedia isn’t the first to offer 400 mbps speeds in Germany. Tele Columbus began offering the same in April 2015 in Potsdam and Jena.
