Lowe’s said it plans to unveil the next generation of security, monitoring and automation (SMA) products at CES next week.
There’s a widespread expectation that the business of broadband-based SMA will grow rapidly this year, and it will be hard to find a company that can help spread SMA wider than Lowe’s. The company launched its Iris cloud-based smart home product line last July.
At CES, Lowe’s intends to showcase at least 15 new Iris devices and services, largely focused on in-home access. The company said it will introduce an assortment of routers and switches, as well as Wi-Fi range extenders and powerline solutions.
Lowe’s also announced a new partnership with Verizon, as well as a set of companies that provide a range of products associated with homes, including Honeywell, Whirlpool, Jarden Safety, Orbit Irrigation Products, Pet Safe, Plastair, Spring Window Fashions, Sylvania, Yale and Pella. Lowe’s had previously announced relationships with Schlage, First Alert, GE Jasco and Radio Thermostat of America.
Lowe’s said it plans to roll out the new home area network products to as many as 100 stores in the U.S. in the first half of 2013, with the full rollout later in the year.
The company will conduct a series of introductions next week, each focusing on one particular aspect of the SMA market.
A demo on Tuesday will showcase safety applications, such as medical monitoring and smoke and carbon monoxide detection. A subsequent demo will focus on monitoring and controlling energy and water consumption. Another will feature a number of programmable smartphone-controlled devices, including connected thermostats and water heaters, sprinkler systems, window blinds, and even network-connected light bulbs.
