All new Mazda vehicles sold in the United States will have Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) by Sept. 1, 2022, Mazda North American Operations announced Thursday.
The assimilation of the AEB is part of the company’s i-ACTIVSENSE safety technologies strategy. Like all AEB systems, the brand’s i-ACTIVESENSE technologies help drivers to avoid crashes or mitigate the severity of an accident when one is inevitable. AEB accomplishes these goals by using on-board sensors to spot an impending crash and notify the driver of that danger. If the driver doesn’t react in time, the system will apply the brakes itself.
The Japanese automaker already makes AEB standard or an option on certain varieties of its Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3, and CX-5. The AEB currently found in Mazda vehicles is known as “Smart City Brake Support” and “Smart Brake Support.” Smart City Brake Support can function at driving speeds between 2-18 mph, and Smart Brake Support works in certain situations above 10 mph.
