TOKYO, March 15 (Kyodo) — Mitsubishi Motors Corp. reported to the transport ministry on Friday that it will recall 19,647 units of its Mirage subcompact cars due to potential brake problems.
Subject to the recall are new models of the Mirage sold in Japan, which were all produced in Thailand between July 2012 and January 2013, according to the automaker.
Front wheel rotation sensors could become eroded due to insufficient waterproofing, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. In the worst case, the sensors could send incorrect signals, resulting in brake malfunction.
The ministry said 45 incidents of brake system problems had been reported since last August, but no accidents have been reported so far.
The Japanese automaker, which has sold around 58,000 units of the subcompact cars in overseas markets, mainly Thailand, said it will deal with technical problems in accordance with the rules of each country.
